Locomotive Class Numbering System
Depending
on their mainly intended duties and their wheel arrangement German
steam locomotives were given the following class numbers

| 01 - 19 | Express Passenger Tender Locomotives |
| 20 - 39 | Passenger Tender Locomotives |
| 40 - 59 | Goods Tender Locomotives |
| 60 - 79 | Passenger Tank Locomotives |
| 80 - 96 | Goods Tank Locomotives |
| 97 | SG Rack Locomotives |
| 98 | SG Light Railway Locomotives |
| 99 | All MG Locomotives |
Running Number
The actual locomotive number consists of the class number and the running number in class class number and running number separated by a little space

number sometimes the first one or two digits of the running number were
employed.
